And as you pointed out - the first is allowing Iran to save face - a critical aspect of dealing with the countries of the Middle East. The direct military involvement of the US changes the equation in how we may be perceived in the region and does open us up for retribution. Will Iran target the US somewhere in the world at some future time? Most assuredly, unless we start a convincing diplomatic dialog immediately.
